The Korean Afternoon: A Cup, and a Pause

by Allen Kim 16 Jul 2026

A Korean Ritual

Everyone knows the mid-afternoon dip. The usual answer is another coffee. But there's an older habit worth borrowing — one that's less about a jolt and more about a pause.

Tea and ginseng as a daily ritual

In Korea, the afternoon cup has long been a small ceremony rather than a quick fix. A cup of ginseng tea, or a spoonful of extract stirred into warm water, is an occasion to stop for a few minutes — to step away from the desk and let the day settle.

A different kind of afternoon

Where coffee is bright and quick, ginseng is earthy and unhurried. The taste asks you to slow down a little: bitter and sweet at once, warm in your hands. Nothing about it is in a rush, which is rather the point.

Not instead of coffee — alongside it

None of this is an argument against coffee, which has its own long and happy tradition. It's an invitation to add a second ritual to the day: one cup for waking up, and one for slowing down.

Keeping the habit

The easiest way to make it stick is to keep it simple and consistent — the same quiet cup at the same time, somewhere away from the screen. The ritual matters more than the recipe.
